Tax File Number
Planning to live or work in Oz? Then you will need a Tax File Number (TFN). A TFN is a unique number issued to people and organisations by the Australian Tax Office to assist the administration of tax. It is not compulsory to have a TFN, however, if you do not have one you may:
- have more tax withheld than you need to or
- be unable to receive government benefits you are entitled to.
A TFN is issued only once, even if you change your circumstances such as name and residency. Having a TFN will help you when you:
start working in Australia
lodge a tax return
ask about your personal tax affairs
set up a savings account
earn investment income
make or receive payments under the pay as you go system
