Am I due a refund?
That depends on a variety of factors!
You could be due Irish tax back from a range of different sources, such as if you paid tuition fees or overpaid tax on your wages.
As a PAYE worker, you may be able to claim tax back on certain expenses - these include:
If you paid tuition fees for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, you may be able to claim a portion of it back!
Also, there is no limit on the amount of individuals you can claim back for!
Essentially, if you or your parents are paying for more than one child to go to college, they can claim back on a portion of the costs of all of them!
You can secure tax back by claiming for fees paid on:
IT and foreign language courses

Flat rate expenses
A Flat Rate Expense is a tax relief available to workers in certain relevant occupations.
Flat Rate Expenses exist in order to help with the costs of some of the necessary aspects of the job - for instance, uniforms, tools and equipment.
Each occupation has a specific rate – more for some, less for others.
The lowest Flat Rate Expense that is available is for Cabin Crew at €64 and the highest Flat Rate is for doctors - €695.

Tax relief is available at 20% for a huge range of medical and dental expenses in Ireland.
And yet, astonishingly, only 4 in 10 Irish households claim back on their available medical/dental expenses each year!
Especially with the average Irish family spending €2,600 on medical and dental bills per year, you can see how you could be owed a lot of cash for your appointments.
It’s really easy to claim tax back on things such as - doctor and consultant fees, prescriptions, ambulances, physiotherapy, and diagnostic procedures.
You may have overpaid tax
This is one of the more popular reasons Irish workers claim their tax back.
If you earn €35,300 or less, you will be taxed at 20%.
However, if you start a new job, you may be put on emergency tax if you do not provide necessary details of your employment to Revenue.
Generally, paying anything over the stated 20% if you earn less than €35,300 is considered an overpayment.
You can find out how much you’re due by using our online tax calculator.
E-worker tax relief
If you work from home either full or part time, you may be entitled to claim back tax back on some of the costs associated with it.
You may also be able to claim even if your week is split between your home and an office.
However, you cannot claim this relief for work you bring home outside of your hours of work.
Essentially, employers can pay €3.20 tax-free a day to all of their employees to cover costs associated with working from home, such as broadband and heating.
However, employers do not have an obligation to make this payment to their employees.
The employee is entitled to claim the following:
Electricity and heat - 10% of cost of electricity and heat on the number of days worked from home over the year
Broadband - 30% of the cost of broadband apportioned on the number of days worked from home over the year
You can find out more about working from home tax relief at our e-worker blog.
