Do you need to file a tax return after you leave Canada?

Before you do anything, you'll need to figure out what your Canadian residency status is.

This is important as filing under the wrong residency status means you may not be tax compliant in line with the Canadian tax authorities.

Essentially, you are a deemed a non-resident for tax purposes if:

  • you live in a different country and are therefore not an ordinary resident of Canada
    Or

  • you have no significant residential ties to Canada and have lived outside of Canada during the tax year
    Or

  • you were in Canada for 183 days or less during the tax year

Most working holiday makers are classed as non-residents.

If you travelled to Canada during the same tax year of your home country, you may not have used up all of the tax credits allotted to you for that year and you could be entitled to a tax refund!

You can find out more about that here.

In 2020, the Canadian tax-free allowance (the amount you can earn without paying tax) was $13,229.

What happens if you do not file

If you owe the Canadian government tax and miss the tax deadline of 30 April, there is a late filing penalty of 5% of your balance if you miss the deadline, plus 1% of your balance owing for each full month your return is late, up to 12 months.

If you do not owe any tax and are applying for your refund for the tax year there is no penalty for filing late and the latest time to file your return is 10 years after the end of the tax year.

If I make $20,000 a year, how much tax do I get back in Canada?

How much tax you get back will depend on how much tax you paid throughout the year while in Canada.

The three main factors that influence how much tax you could be due back are:

  • If you overpaid income tax
  • If you overpaid Canadian Pension Plan (CPP)
  • If you overpaid Employer Insurance (EI)

So, if you think you overpaid on any of those, you could be due a tax refund!
