Top 6 Places to See in New Zealand

Check out these top 6 places to visit on your trip to New Zealand

With a harmonious blend of natural beauty and man-made enticements, New Zealand offers a plethora of adventures for anyone seeking to explore its islands. The country is made up of the North Island or ‘’Te Ika-a-Māui’’ and the South Island or ‘’Waipounamu’’, located in the South Pacific.

We’ve put together a short list of just some of the places you should see:

 1.   Queenstown

Built around an inlet called Queenstown bay and framed by a stunning set of mountains called the Remarkables, Queenstown is the perfect place for anyone seeking adventure. The resort town boasts more than 20 adventure activities from mountain biking to skydiving and jet boating.

If you like to ski, Queenstown has four ski fields that are within easy reach of the town. You can get a close up look at the native flightless ‘’Kiwi’’ among other things at the Kiwi Birdlife Park after catching a stunning view of the whole bay from the Skyline Gondola.

2.    Lake Tekapo

This little town offers unobstructed views across a turquoise lake and stunning night skies from the comfort of the Tekapo Springs. It’s a spiritual little place where people often just stop for a quick photo opportunity but it’s worth staying here overnight to catch a look at the magnificent star filled night sky at the Mt John Observatory.

3.    Kaikoura

Kaikoura is the perfect seaside spot for marine encounters and is not too far from Christchurch. Take a tour on the ocean and go whale watching; one of the most popular tourist attractions in New Zealand. You’ll also find the bathing place of seal pups at Ohau Waterfall about 20 minutes’ drive from Kaikoura.

A short walk to the waterfall will lead you to a seal nursery, where seal pups swim and play at certain times of the year. This magical experience is free but it’s seasonal, so make sure you check ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

4.    Auckland

With its melting pot of cultures and thriving inner city suburbs, Auckland is an exciting place to visit. The city is built on 50 volcanos and they’re not all extinct! So besides making your way in and out of the many hip bars and cafes, it’s worth seeing this natural phenomenon from certain viewpoints such as Mt Wellington or Mt Albert.

Pay a visit to the sub-tropical Bay of Islands and walk among the giant kauri trees or a hike along one of the nature trails. You’ll kick yourself if you visit Auckland and miss out on this little slice of paradise.

The capital city of New Zealand is located on the southern tip of the North Island. Don’t miss a visit to “Te Papa”, the national museum and gallery of New Zealand, which is full of exciting treasures, including an astounding collection of Maori artefacts.

Another one of Wellington’s most popular attractions is the little red cable car that will take you through the botanic gardens.

Wellington is also full of hip live music bars so for a night of live music you can head over to Bodega on Ghuznee St or Meow on Edward St for a more Rock ‘n’ Roll vibe.

6.   Christchurch

After the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, the people of Christchurch have been rebuilding and developing exciting projects to create a new future for the city.

One of the projects worth checking out is the START Mall. Made from a labyrinth of shipping containers, it’s still just a temporary structure so get there quick before it disappears!

Christchurch is a garden city and you can take a tour of its many public and private garden spaces such as the Mona Vale, the Sanitarium Gardens, and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, all of which are worth a visit.

If you’re heading to New Zealand on a working holiday, don’t forget to check out these wonderful places.

And make sure you get that tax refund you worked so hard for, so you can visit all of them!
