Yes, in some circumstances it is possible for you to claim a tax refund\u00a0in Ireland, including illness benefit and unemployment benefit, when you are unemployed, assuming you paid tax when you were employed. You can even claim as far back as 4 years.<\/p>\n

You may also be eligible to claim a tax refund<\/a> if you\u2019re out of work due to illness\u2026 but you can\u2019t get tax back if you\u2019re still employed.<\/p>\n

What is a cumulative tax basis?<\/h2>\n

Well, an employee\u2019s tax is usually calculated on a cumulative basis. What this means is each payday, all your earnings and all tax credits from 1 January of that year are accumulated. This ensures you\u2019ve paid the correct amount of tax and you\u2019ve received the full benefit of all your tax credits.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t use your tax credits, or you\u2019re taxed incorrectly, they\u2019re carried to the next pay period within that tax year.<\/p>\n

So basically, when your employer works out your tax liability, they\u2019re calculating the total tax due from 1 January to the date when you received your most recent paycheck. What are the rules for claiming a tax refund if I\u2019m sick or unemployed?<\/h2>\n

Say tax has been deducted from your wages since 1 January last and you\u2019re now unemployed, you may be entitled to tax back. If you\u2019ve not paid any tax, you won\u2019t be due a refund.<\/p>\n

Jobseeker\u2019s Benefit, Illness Benefit and payments under the Occupational Injury Benefit Scheme (including Injury Benefit, Disablement Benefit and Incapacity Supplement) are taxable sources of income.<\/p>\n

You should note that the first \u20ac13 of your weekly Jobseeker\u2019s Benefit is not taxable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
