    xPrivate health insurance refers to having a Private Hospital Health Insurance Policy through a registered Health Fund.
    Each year you will receive a statement from your Health Fund showing the premium you or your employer have paid and the type of cover you are insured for whether it be hospital, ancillary (Extras) or combined cover.
    This statement will advise whether you are able to claim a 30% rebate on your health insurance premium.
    The 30% rebate is not affected by your level of income and may be claimed in a number of ways. The most common way that this rebate is claimed is by a reduction in your private health insurance premium. If your premium has not been reduced then you can claim a rebate through your tax return or directly through medicare.
    You may have to pay a medicare levy surcharge if you and your dependants did not have an appropriate level of hospital cover for the whole year.

    The Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) relates to debts arising by students who attend courses in Higher Education Institutions and defer the payment of their fees.
    On 1 January 2005 HECS changed its name to HELP - the Higher Education Loan Program. The only thing that has changed for former HECS debt holders is the name.
    A common way for students to repay their HECS/HELP debt is through the taxation system. When the total of your taxable income, add-backs for rental property losses, reportable fringe benefits and exempt foreign income is greater than $43,151 then repayments starting at 4% of this total are required by the ATO. These repayments are shown in your Income Tax Assessment and will either reduce the amount of any income tax refund you are entitled to or increase the amount of your income tax liability.
