If you live and work in the Netherlands, you’re legally obliged to have the standard health insurance called Zorgverzekering.

What you may not be aware of is that you could be entitled to claim the health insurance allowance (Zorgtoeslag) to help cover part of your insurance costs.

Who can claim the health insurance allowance in the Netherlands?

 

You will be eligible to apply if:

  • You have Dutch health insurance
  • You have Dutch, EU, Liechtensteiner, Norwegian, Icelandic or Swiss nationality or have a valid residence permit
  • Your personal/joint income doesn’t exceed a certain maximum amount
  • Your personal/joint amount of savings and investments doesn’t exceed a certain level
  • If you’re married, you should claim your healthcare benefits together with your spouse

Zorgtoeslag FAQs

Zorgtoeslag is a healthcare allowance for people with premium healthcare insurance in the Netherlands.

  • You are in the military or a conscientious objector
  • You are detained
  • You are insured for medical expenses abroad 
  • You have insurance, but you do not pay a premium 
  • You are under the age of 18
  • You are in the Netherlands to study

A Sofi number is a unique personal number the Dutch tax and customs administration (Belastingdienst) uses to identify registered taxpayers. In order to apply for healthcare benefits, you and your allowance partner should have a Sofi number. If you don’t have one, we can arrange it for you. It consists of 9 digits and you can find this number on most of your payment documents.

Healthcare benefits application (Zorgtoeslag): €60

If the tax year has already ended you’ll get a final estimate stating whether you’ll get refund and if so, how much. The amount will be transferred to the account the tax office has for you.

If the tax year hasn’t ended, you’ll receive a provisional assessment stating the monthly refunds you’ll be receiving.

You may be eligible for the healthcare allowance if:

  • Your income for the 2024 tax year is less than €37,496 or €47,368 if you have an allowance partner.
  • Your savings and investments for the 2024 tax year from the Netherlands and abroad don’t exceed €140,213 or €177,301 if you claim jointly.
  • Your income for the 2023 tax year is less than €38,520 or €48,224 if you have an allowance partner.
  • Your savings and investments for the 20232 tax year from the Netherlands and abroad don’t exceed €127,582 or €161,329 if you claim jointly. 
  • A signed pack
  • Income statements
  • Passport copy
  • Marriage certificate / notarised cohabitation agreement, if applicable
  • Passport copy of spouse/partner, if applicable
  • Residency certificate of spouse (issued in the past 6 months), if applicable
  • Statement of earnings for spouse, if applicable
  • Copy of Dutch health insurance policy or other document confirming you have Dutch health insurance

For the 2024 tax year the maximum amount you can get is €123 or €236 per month if you have an allowance partner.

For the 2023 tax year the maximum amount you can get is €154 or €265 per month if you have an allowance partner.

For 2023 you should submit your application by 01/09/2024.

For 2024 you should submit your application by 01/09/2025.

The average tax office processing time is 3-4 months from the date your application is received. Remember to provide the required information in a timely manner, otherwise delays could occur.

  • It’s FREE to find out what approximate allowance you might receive
  • The amount of healthcare allowance you can receive depends on your (joint) income
  • Children aren’t eligible for Zorgtoeslag as they’re insured for free until the age of 18
  • If you or your spouse live abroad and receive income from the Netherlands you could still be entitled to healthcare benefits
  • If you worked temporarily in the Netherlands for a Dutch employer you should have paid for health insurance as well and can get the healthcare allowance
  • You can apply for the current year and receive the healthcare allowance monthly
