Kindergeld is the state benefit given to parents of children in Germany. Foreigners living in Germany can also apply for Kindergeld (child benefits) as long as they have a valid residency permit. Residents of EU/EEA countries do not need a residence permit to apply for the benefits.
The amount depends on the age and number of children.
You may be entitled to claim the benefit if:
You worked in Germany
You are an EU/EEA citizen
You have a permanent residence permit
Even if you worked and lived in Germany but your child/children did not, you may still be able to claim the benefit.
Residents of an EU or European Economic Area country, as well as residents in Switzerland are entitled to claim child benefits in Germany.
Note:
Since 01.01.2018 you are able to claim Kindergeld (Childcare benefits) for only 6 months back in time. The date when the application is received will be taken in consideration. Which means that the later you sent it, the later it will be received by the German authorities and the less months you will be able to apply for. Contact us as soon as you start working in Germany so that we can claim the maximum amount for you.
Kindergeld is a childcare benefit paid by the German state to parents working in Germany. It is also paid even when the child is residing abroad in any EU/EEA country. All children in Germany are entitled to receive child benefit starting from their birth until the age of 18. It’s paid regardless of parent’s income and can be received generally as per the Income Tax Law, when the parents have their place of abode or habitual residence in Germany.

The personal communications from your agents made all the difference in my choice to use TaxBack. Overwhelmed with what should have been a simple process due to an error going back several years in my taxes, I gave up doing them myself and handed it over to TaxBack. I was assured all 3 years would be fixed and my refunds recieved. Once I handed over my paperwork I never had to ask about updates or remind my agent to do anything - they were so on top of it and made it so easy! Matthew Lloyd was especially helpful and I can't thank him enough for his continued clear communications and patient explanations which saved me so much time!
