Tax implications for Employees in Receipt of the COVID-19 Subsidy Payments
The COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) & Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) payments are liable to income tax and USC. However, neither were taxable in real-time through payroll.
Instead, an end-of-year review will be carried out by the Revenue Commissioner to determine the tax liability of each employee who received one of these payments. This preliminary calculation will not include tax credits and deductible expenses and therefore may appear far higher than actual.
The degree to which workers will be affected varies. Any liability due will depend on the individual's personal circumstances, marital status, tax credit entitlements and amount, and sources of income for the year. Now more so than ever, it is imperative that all taxpayers are tax savvy and claim all of their entitlements.
Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS)
The TWSS was introduced in March and ended on the 31st August 2020 with the aim of guiding employers through the instability of COVID-19.
While there can be no doubt that the implementation of these supports was absolutely necessary and has helped thousands of employers and employees alike, the processing of payments fell short in its execution, leaving those in receipt, significantly out of pocket by the end of the year.
Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP)
The government introduced a 'COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment' of €350 per week for employees and self-employed individuals who lost their employment due to the coronavirus outbreak.
