Below you can see our top 5 wine regions across Australia. We think they are well worth checking out on a road trip before you head home.

Most people coming to Australia nowadays on a working holiday visa will at some stage consider working in a regional area, sometimes to secure a second year visa or just to have a traditional Australian experience.

Where better to spend your three month stint of regional work or get that traditional Aussie experience than in one of the many wine regions the country has to offer? In season, these areas provide lots of pruning and picking work for backpackers. The best part is that you will get to drink the fruits of your LABOUR while many of your fellow backpackers in other areas will be left drinking goon! Read on and check out our top 5 picks.

Anyone living in Sydney or greater regions will tell you that Hunter Valley is up there amongst the top spots for a long weekend with it being just under a 3 hour drive from Sydney.

This region is really well renowned for its Semillon and you will find that this and Semillon Sauvignon are a staple on the tasting menus across most of the wineries in the region.

There are a variety of great day trips that you can do from Sydney with most tours taking in five wineries/cellar doors, lunch and a trip to magnificent to the Hunter Valley Gardens. However, if you have time for an overnight stay it is well worth it. There is a wide variety of accommodation available for all budgets from YHA Hostels to camping or a range of hotels. Below you can see myself and a few friends enjoying the surroundings.

Margaret River, WA

Margaret River is just under a 3 hour drive from the Perth CBD and if you are located on the West coast you should most definitely take a trip to this region.

Margaret River is simply breath-taking and there is a variety of spectacular areas to stop off and enjoy the Cabernet Sauvignon or sample theChardonnay which is rated as being among Australia’s finest.

YHA Hostels has accommodation here so it is very affordable to visit and there are also an abundance of camping grounds and hotels in the region.

Coonawarra, SA

When speaking about wine and Coonawarra there are generally two words that will come to mind for wine lovers -  ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’.

The Cabernet Sauvignon from this region is world class and if you have yet to try it you need to get your hands on a bottle ASAP as you are missing out big time.

Coonawarra is located just under 4 hours away from Adelaide and if you happen to be planning a road trip from Adelaide to Melbourne this is an ideal halfway mark to stop and spend the night as it is located right on the border of South Australia and Victoria.

Barossa Valley, SA

The variety that the Barossa region is best known for is its Shiraz.

Barossa Valley is little over an hour outside Adelaide and again there are a variety of accommodation types on offer including Barossa Backpackers.

It’s a must see for all in Adelaide and if you can’t get out there for an overnight trip then be sure to speak to your local tourist office or travel agent about one of the many day trips that run daily from Adelaide CBD. The daytrips offer a great way to get to the region if you are limited in terms of time or transport.

Yarra Valley, VIC

Victoria would not be the biggest wine state in Australia but what they do, they do very well!

If you are in Melbourne then the Yarra Valley should be added to your hit list of places to visit as it is just over an hour north of Melbourne.

Once, in the Yarra Valley you should kick back and enjoy one of the region’s Pinot Noirs.
