If you live and work in the Netherlands, you’re legally obliged to have the standard health insurance called Zorgverzekering. What you may not be aware of is that you could be entitled to claim the health insurance allowance (Zorgtoeslag) to help cover part of your insurance costs. Taxback.com can check if you’re eligible and claim this allowance on your behalf.
You might be eligible to claim the health insurance allowance if the following apply:
You have Dutch health insurance
You have Dutch, EU, Liechtenstein, Norwegian, Icelandic or Swiss nationality or have a valid residence permit
Your personal/joint income doesn’t exceed a certain maximum amount
Your personal/joint amount of savings and investments doesn’t exceed a certain level
If you’re married, you should claim your healthcare benefits together with your spouse. For more information on Dutch healthcare benefits– check out our FAQs.
Zorgtoeslag is a healthcare allowance for people with premium healthcare insurance in the Netherlands.
?What are the income requirements to claim?
You may be eligible for the healthcare allowance if:
Your income for the 2018 tax year is less than €28,720 or €35,996 if you have allowance partner.
Your savings and investments for the 2018 tax year (until 01/01/2018) from Netherlands and abroad don’t exceed €113,415 or €143,415 if you claim jointly.
Your income for the 2019 tax year will be less than €29,562 or €37,885 if you have allowance partner.
Your savings and investments for the 2019 tax year (until 01/01/2019) from Netherlands and abroad don’t exceed €114,776 or €145,136 if you claim jointly.
?Under what circumstances am I not eligible for healthcare allowance?
You are military
You are detained
You are mentally ill
You are under the age of 18
You are in the Netherlands to study
?What documents do I need to apply?
A signed pack

?What’s a Sofi number and do I need one?
A Sofi number is a unique personal number the Dutch tax and customs administration (Belastingdienst) uses to identify registered taxpayers. In order to apply for healthcare benefits, you and your allowance partner should have a Sofi number. If you don’t have one, we can arrange it for you.
?How much money can I get?
For the 2018 tax year the maximum amount you can get is €94 or €176 per month if you have an allowance partner.
For the 2019 tax year the maximum amount you can get is €99 or €192 per month if you have an allowance partner.
?How much does it cost?
Healthcare benefits application (Zorgtoeslag): 60 Euro
Sofi number application: 30 Euro
?When is the deadline to submit my application?
For 2018 you should submit your application by 01/09/2019.
For 2019 you should submit your application by 01/09/2020.
?What happens after my application has been submitted?
If the tax year has already ended you’ll get a final estimate stating whether you’ll get refund and if so, how much. The amount will be transferred to the account the tax office has for you.
If the tax year hasn’t ended, you’ll receive a provisional assessment stating the monthly refunds you’ll be receiving.
?How long will it take to get my allowance?
The average tax office processing time is 3-4 months from the date your application is received. Remember to provide the required information in a timely manner, otherwise delays could occur.
Sofi number application processing usually takes about 9 weeks.
Useful Zorgtoeslag Facts
It’s FREE to find out what approximate allowance you might receive.
The amount of healthcare allowance you can receive depends on your (joint) income.
Children aren’t eligible for Zorgtoeslag as they’re insured for free until the age of 18.
If you or your spouse live abroad and receive income from the Netherlands you could still be entitled to healthcare benefits.
If you worked temporarily in the Netherlands for a Dutch employer you should have paid for health insurance as well and can get the healthcare allowance.
You can apply for the current year and receive the healthcare allowance monthly.

The personal communications from your agents made all the difference in my choice to use TaxBack. Overwhelmed with what should have been a simple process due to an error going back several years in my taxes, I gave up doing them myself and handed it over to TaxBack. I was assured all 3 years would be fixed and my refunds recieved. Once I handed over my paperwork I never had to ask about updates or remind my agent to do anything - they were so on top of it and made it so easy! Matthew Lloyd was especially helpful and I can't thank him enough for his continued clear communications and patient explanations which saved me so much time!

Taxback.com has been so , so easy to use and understand . My agent Yordan Marinov was very helpful and had great patience with me as I'm not very good at doing anything like this on line .I have already told friends and family about Taxback and that they should use them .So easy and uncomplicated .
